About the Department
The Master of Public Administration Program prepares students for positions in the public service through community service, research and a program of study that facilitates intellectual development, promotes scholarship and integrates the theory and practice of public administration.
The Department of Public Administration offers one of only four accredited Masters of Public Administration programs in upstate New York. It is the only one which focuses exclusively on research and service with local governments and nonprofit organizations. The Department’s seven full-time faculty and senior research associate serve on numerous professional and community boards and provide technical assistance and research services to many regional and national organizations. We draw students from Buffalo to New York City and from Albany to Jamestown and from several foreign countries including China, Korea, Sudan and Eastern Europe who participate fully in the Department’s research and service activities.
The MPA Program promotes excellence by preparing individuals for management in public and nonprofit administration, emphasizing ethics and values to meet the highest possible standards and foster an institutional culture that advances democratic administration and governance with an international perspective.
MPA students become informed leaders and responsible citizens who:
- are well-versed in public administration;
- think critically, creatively and ethically;
- possess analytical and technical skills to be creative problem-solvers;
- can adapt to changing political and social environments; and
- remain actively involved in professional and community service.
Mission
Our mission is to develop individual and institutional capacity for community-based public practice.
Vision
Our vision is to become a nationally recognized leader on community-based public affairs through integrated research, education and practice.
