Free SKills Workshops for MPA Students
The workshops are open to all MPA students and students who are applying to the MPA program. While we strongly encourage conditionally admitted students to attend ALL of the workshops, other students may attend those that are of interest to them. Reminder notices will be posted on the MPA listserv; students who plan to attend should RSVP directly to the instructor. All workshops except one are scheduled from 5:00 – 5:45 pm to accommodate those taking evening classes and minimize workday conflicts.

For students who want to increase their statistical tool kit. This workshop is for students who have already completed PAFF 510 or who have had a previous statistics class. Learn how to use SPSS for descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, and multiple regression.

PAFF 534 (Personnel Administration, a.k.a. Human Resource Mgt) has been approved by the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Professional Credentialing as a means of fulfilling one of the requirements for the Nursing Home Administrator Licensure.
Professor Thomas Sinclair has been appointed as Chair of the “New Tools for Public Financial Management Working Group” for the International Association of Schools and Institutes of Administration (IASIA). The annual conference for IASIA will be held in Kampala, Uganda on July 14-18, 2008.
Professor Thomas Sinclair has been appointed to the Village of Johnson City Dissolution Study Committee. The committee of 16 residents of Johnson City and the Town of Union will review all village operations to develop a plan to dissolve the village as a government. With a 2000 population of over 15,500 people and professional police and fire departments, the Johnson City plan is one of the most comprehensive dissolution studies undertaken in the State of New York.
Professor Nadia Rubaii-Barrett was a member of the U.S. delegation to the NASPAA International Conference on Quality in Public Administration Education held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in December 2007. She presented on a panel on National Approaches to Assessing Quality. The conference included nearly 40 representatives from more than 15 countries.
Professor Nadia Rubaii-Barrett has been appointed chair of the Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation (COPRA), the accreditation arm of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA).
Professor Nadia Rubaii-Barrett has been appointed to the NASPAA Standards 2009 Revision Task Force, the group responsible for a comprehensive overall of the NASPAA Standards. She serves on the subcommittee assigned to develop new standards regarding students and student services.
Professor Allison Alden will be presenting a paper on "Collaborative Problem Solving Through Civic Relationships" at the annual conference of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) on March 8, 2008 in Dallas, TX.
Professor Allison Alden will be presenting a paper titled "Community Development through Collaborative Leadership" with Carol Coppens, Executive Director of the YWCA, at the Community Development Society Annual International Conference, June 22-25, 2008 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
On February 20 Professor Allison Alden held an informational meeting for MPA students who plan on completing their internships during the coming Summer and Fall semesters. Ten students attended.
BU, in collaboration with BCC and Davis College, was awarded a grant by NYS Campus Compact to work jointly with faculty who are interested in becoming engaged in service learning. The primary objective is to increase the number and quality of service learning courses offered to our students. Professor Allison Alden was asked to serve as faculty mentor to two other faculty members.
The Center City Coordination Program (C3), a HUD COPC-funded project, has successfully transitioned into sustainable community-based forms, under the direction of Professor Allison Alden. The Final C3 Celebration will be held on March 6, 2008 from 4-6pm in the UDC Community Center. All community and university partners are invited to drop by the open house to: thank the partners who have been instrumental to the success of C3, view the newly revised C3 webpage, meet the Task Team Leaders who have helped guide the dozens of events and activities accomplished by these productive Teams, re-connect with students who have interned through C3, read about the tremendous accomplishments of the last five years and discover how C3 has transformed into its new sustainable forms.
On March 3rd and March 7th, 2008, David Campbell conducted trainings on new approaches to board governance for the Tompkins County Human Services Coalition.
On March 5th, David Campbell served as a judge for the Association of Junior League International's annual Fund for the Future and Junior League Vision awards.
Professor Campbell has arranged to have Maureen Curley, Executive Director for the Campus Compact to visit the University Downtown Center on Friday, April 11th for a small group discussion with students and faculty on service learning. David will provide additional information on the event as it is finalized.
Professor Yi Lu’s article “Managing performance measurement: the role of agencies” was accepted for publication and will appear in a forthcoming issue of Public Performance & Management Review.
Professor Yi Lu’s article “Discussion of a Utilization-Driven Approach for Performance-Informed Budgeting in China” was accepted for publication by Chinese Public Administration.
