Service Learning
The Department of Public Administration is committed to ensuring that our students have many opportunities to apply their skills to real problems confronting local organizations and governments. Many of our faculty members incorporate service learning projects into their courses. Here are some examples of recent projects:
Fall 2007
Police Department
Students in PAFF 510, the Logic of Inquiry, are conducting a community survey for the Binghamton Police Department, assessing community attitudes about the police.
Students in PAFF 537, Organizational Behavior, will be developing learning modules for the Binghamton Police Department on cultural competency. The 15-minute modules will be used by the Police Department during roll call.
Spring 2007
Local Government Consolidation
Students taking PAFF 531, Administrative Law, explored the legal requirements for local government annexation and consolidation, while students taking PAFF 527, Public and Not-for-Profit Finance, completed a comparative examination of the costs of delivering local government services.
Broome County Transit

Students in PAFF 521, Introduction to Public Administration, assessed the public information technology system being used by the College of Community and Public Affairs and drafted Requests for Proposals that addressed the needs identified in the assessment.
